I expected less but was pleasantly surprised. It is small and convenient to use for quick code reading and basic data. Actually with the free updates from the Autel website it has a nice library of code definitions and covers even more than basic PIDs. It is easy to use and is driven by 2-buttons. It really is nice to quickly view the monitors prior to emission testing. The tool loads quickly and displays data reasonably fast and is easy to carry. The drawbacks are the short (2-foot) cord, small screen, not able to go back on selection due to the 2-buttons. For the price and ease of operation I am very happy with this tool. Just remember it does not take the place of a good enhanced scan tool. Read more...

I’m told that the more expensive readers can give you real time readouts and diagnose as you drive but that’s not what I need. I wanted to be able to get the code, erase the code, and see if the code came back. Before purchase of this, the check engine light came on and I took the car to the dealer where they promptly charged me to tell me that they erased the code and shouldn’t do anything to repair the underlying problem unless it keeps reoccurring. Diagnosing and fixing the evaporative system would be time-consuming and expensive since the code indicates a general problem. Well, a month after the code was erased, it came back again. That’s when I decided to buy this code reader (cheaper than the dealer charge) and erase it myself. The code has not recurred now for half a year. This could have been a cold weather problem where a part was frozen or sticking and not a wholesale failure of a component. I don’t know but I feel I saved myself big money. Why didn’t I just go to an auto parts superstore and use their code reader for free? Well, I live in the middle of nowhere and I didn’t want to have to make long trips, and I’m not sure they would have erased the code for me if I did. This is an expensive, well made, and easy to use device. Read more...

I must say I did quite a bit of research on this unit when it came out but the price had me stray away from it. Last week I happened to be looking at the scangaue and I happeend to see it for sale on Amazon so I figured ok lets give it a try.
I received it today, unpacked it and rushed out to hook it up to the car.
First and most striking part was how similar it was to the scangauge from look of the display to the placement and the font of the words.
Then it took me nearly seconds to set it up and see what it was capable of. Now people have complained about innacuracy but this is not the case with this unit. The one I received is V1.1 and it is exact with the readings on my odometer when it comes to miles or distance traveled. Read more...

The scanner powers up quickly and overall seems a bit faster than the Actron. It’s easy to use; as a guy I’ve yet to open any kind of manual for the Autel, yet was able to read by my check engine and ABS codes that are popping up on my vehicle. In playing with the Actron the other day I pulled up the screen to read all live data at once and scrolling down was very, very slow and the tool would lag when it was asked to display the next page of data. The Autel 703 scrolled through all the live data without any lag. I haven’t exported any data to a PC yet so I can’t tell you how well that works. On screen descriptions were provided for both PCM codes and ABS codes. Read more...

Picked this code reader for it gives a brief narrative discription of what’s wrong with which system- generalized information but good to know when you have no reference materials available to look up a code… The last time I needed to know what a code number was indicating was on a Dodge van when I was back deep in the NC mountains. Drove that van 400 miles home before I knew what the code indicated. That van blinks out code numbers.
Received this device yesterday. Read the code on a Lincoln/Ford product with the “service engine soon” light on last night, then, did some research on the Internet last night and looked at a DVD factory service manual I have for the vehicle… Picked up a .00 EGR pressure sensor at Auto Zone, installed it, cleared the code from the car’s computer and now the vehicle is back in business running properly without the service engine soon light lit up. I spent a bit of time researching OBD scanners before I bought my Autel MaxiScan. There are many many options available out there in the market – USB connectivity, SD card slots, full displays, detachable cords, and so on. Although the more you spend the more features you get, there are three major features I think an OBD scanner must do: 1) pull generic AND manufacturer codes, 2) delete codes/reset the computer, and 3) check if the computer and the subsystems (02 sensors, ERG system, and so on) are ready to be inspected.
This tiny unit does all three major functions – and that’s about it. It will only display the code, not what hit means. But it comes with a book that interprets generic codes, and a CD for manufacturer specific codes. All this information is also readily available online. Read more...
